The Times-Picayune — April 5th 1968 publication

The first time I heard of the band U2 I was stationed in West Germany. This was in the early 80’s. My kaserne was located in a small town called Neu Ulm. Right across the river from old Ulm. A good place to be stationed. Stuttgart to the North. Munich to the south(east). I was fortunate in that I was able to live off post in a little farming town about 20+ minutes away. On this day it was the heart of winter and we were working seven days a week. Twelve plus hours days in support of the Pershing Nuclear Missile companies. It seemed never ending and was just a freaking crazy time! This particular Sunday morning and I was headed to work. The sun just barely coming up. It was FREEZING cold!!! What also sucked was my heater cables had broken on my VW and I had no heat in my car. But, on quiet clear quiet mornings like this day. I could pick up radio Luxembourg in my car. Luxembourg is a country surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. Every Belgium speaks all these languages. Plus English. Radio Luxembourg was a multilingual commercial broadcaster in Luxembourg. I can still hear the radio announcer with his very heavy French accent speak as I was driving to work”

” Now playing…..U2….Sunday… Bloody…Sunday”

For me it was the perfect song for the coming day. I was still in country when they performed at Live Aid on TV.

U2: Pride in the Name of Love

In the name of love

One man come in the name of love

One man, he come and go

One man comes he to justify

One man to overthrow

In the name of love

What more in the name of love

In the name of love

What more in the name of love

Early evening, April four

A shot rings out in the Memphis sky

Free at last, they took your life

They could not take your pride

In the name of love

In the name of love

In the name of love

In the name of love
